Established in 1980 along with 6 other national parks, national wildlife refuges, national monuments, wild and scenic rivers, recreational areas, national forests, and conservation areas in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. Gates of the Arctic National Park protects portions of the Brooke Range and is the northermost national park. The design is inspired by the beautiful rugged granite spires known as the Arrigetch Peaks.
